One virtual-background lighting problem at Cisco headquarters grew into Studio 2.0, a standardized global network of compatible broadcast studios.
01 / Project brief
Cisco’s ReflectMedia studios used a reflective silver background and green camera ring, but presenter lighting did not look realistic. Before a Boeing presentation, Cisco needed two engineers to appear inside a 787 Dreamliner with its blue and purple cabin lighting.
The larger challenge was global consistency. Footage from Beijing, Singapore, San Jose, and other locations was edited together, so each studio required compatible lighting, technology, and production standards.
JAZ replaced ReflectMedia temporarily with a conventional green screen and matched RGBW lighting to a Boeing reference image. Boeing representatives believed Cisco had filmed inside an aircraft, and the presentation helped Cisco secure a $40 million agreement.
Cisco then hired JAZ to develop Studio 2.0. JAZ standardized lighting, capture technology, green-screen workflow, procurement, commissioning, and production practices across San Jose, Beijing, Singapore, Tokyo, Raleigh-Durham, Herndon, Bedfont Lakes, and other locations. Established manufacturers and creative logistics helped preserve the standard in difficult markets such as Beijing.
